What causes wrinkles?
Wrinkles in the face are caused by excessive muscle movement. Initially these are present as fine lines but as we age these lines become more prominent and deeper. As you grow older your skin becomes less elastic due to the loss of collagen and reduced vascularisation of tissues. Wrinkles occur when certain muscles become more dominant and the skin does not have the ability to be as elastic in response to these muscle contractions. In addition, muscles become constrictive and naturally form creases and wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles can be eliminated or lessened by relaxing the dominant muscle and this can be achieved by using the anti-wrinkle injections.
What are anti-wrinkle injections?
Anti-wrinkle injections have been used to successfully treat wrinkles in Australia for over 20 years. They are a simple, non-surgical treatment aimed at temporarily improving the appearance of moderate to severe wrinkles.
Anti-wrinkle injections are composed of a purified protein that is a naturally derived product and are used to reduce unwanted muscle activity. Anti-wrinkle injectables are a safe, non-invasive procedure that effectively reduces the appearance of facial lines, giving a more refreshed and rejuvenated appearance.
How long does the anti-wrinkle treatment last?
Depending on your metabolism and the regularity of treatments, the effect lasts for approximately 3-4 months. Studies have shown that anti-wrinkle injections are more effective and last longer when given at regular intervals due to progressive weakening of the muscles treated. If treatment is ceased, muscle activity returns to its previous state.
How do the anti-wrinkle injections work and how is it done?
Anti-wrinkle injections relax muscle by inhibiting the secretion of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter needed for muscle contraction. The strategic relaxation of certain facial muscles leads to decreased wrinkling of the overlying skin.
Treatment is simple and generally well tolerated. It takes a short time and involves tiny injections into the area. The effects of anti-wrinkle injections may be noticed within 2-3 days, but it may take up to 2 weeks to take full effect.
Is there any discomfort with treatment?
Discomfort is minimal and only lasts for the duration of the injections. There is a possibility of very mild bruising at the treatment site, but this is not common and resolves quickly.
How much does it cost?
Cost can vary as it depends on the area being treated and the severity of static lines. The amount of solution administered is dependant upon factors such as age, gender, treatment area, muscle strength and degree of wrinkling. Dr Saba Qutub will assess you at the time of consultation and advise you of the exact cost.
